In the beginning there were verbs and nonverbs an we learned the difference. That is this lesson. A beginning. Grammar is logical, writing is logical. We must build a foundation to go forward. As such, here is the beginning. Review the material, take the notes. Learn the lessons. Post questions and give answers. You are learning the material and, in so learning, becoming the experts.

Words are either VERBS or NON-VERBS (NV)

VERB =

  • 1.   Action or Existence

  • a.   run, jump, think, love

  • b.   am, is

2.   Does not end in -ing

  • a.   ex. “loving,” “running,” “jumping,” “laughing” = (NV)

3.   Does not have “to” before it

  • a.   ex. “to jump,” “to think,”  ‘to be” = NV

Determine if the following are Verbs (V) or NonVerbs (NV). Be able to justify your response.

hippopotamus

dance

chasing      the dog is chasing the cat

chases

am

to be

middle school

believe

singing

market

pollo (chicken)

to attempt

talk

joy

ignore

With each of the above, be certain to tell how you know your answer is correct. Remember, start at the beginning. For example, “ignore = V because it is action, does not end in -ing, and does not have “to” before it.
