Definitions
Education, like all corporate bureaucracy or specialized field, has its own set of specialized language. These are my definitions, refined by my classroom experience, grounded in my educational philosophy, and, when necessary, pulled from my experience as a current doctoral student of education. The terms are defined in context of their use on this website and provided to give you a handle on the exclusive language of education.
Successful High School Student
A student who has created his/her own post-high school plan, who critically thinks, clearly communicates, and demonstrates personal responsibility. The successful high school student comes with all grade point averages (gpas), from all walks of life, and in all corners of our nation. They are not defined by their grades, but by their character.
High Stakes Testing
The generic term used for tests given by outside companies to students, the results of which directly influence the school's rating, the teachers' employment, and/or the students' graduation.
Sometimes known as "mandated testing" or "assessment," the state regulations can be found at your state's Department of Education website. (try googling your state's name, department of education, testing)
